Yin Yoga: History, Benefits, Poses & Beginner’s Guide

Yin yoga is a deliberate style of yoga as exercise which includes principles of traditional chinese medicine with postures that are held for longer periods of time than in other styles. With the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility, it’s poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body.

The order of postures are meant to stimulate the channels of the subtle body known as meridians in Chinese medicine and as “nadis” in “Hatha yoga”. The goals of Yin yoga are:

History of Yin Yoga

It was founded by martial arts expert and yoga teacher Paulie Zink Taoist yoga (Tao Yin) in the late 1970s . Also, it was encouraged by its teachers Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers.

This yoga is taught across North America and Europe. As taught by Paul and Sarah, it is not intended as a complete practice by itself. But it is intended as a complement to more active forms of yoga and exercise.

The long-held postures have been used both in Hatha yoga in India and in Tao yin (Taoist yoga) China. Also, long-held stretches are recommended in Western physical disciplines, such as gymnastics and ballet to increase flexibility.

This style is more restorative practice than other forms of exercise. Yin yoga is a great starting point for anyone who are interested in meditation as it has an internal focus.
